📌 Why You NEED a Classroom Newsletter (Even Though Your tO-DO LIST IS ALREADY ENDLESS)

To be honest, I didn’t start sending home newsletters until my 9th year of teaching. 😬 If you’re like me, you may have thought:

  • “I don’t know what to include in my newsletter.”
  • “I don’t have time to make one.”
  • “Would parents even read them?!”

But once I FINALLY took the time to send out a newsletter for the first time, I immediately learned that a well-organized newsletter actually makes your life easier by:

Reducing parent emails/messages (so you answer the same question less often)
Improving student accountability (parents stay informed on homework/projects/important dates)
Strengthening home-school connections (without extra work for you!)

👀 And guess what? It doesn’t have to take hours! They’ve made my life so much easier that I actually send them out weekly now!

What to Include in Your Classroom Newsletter

Not sure what to write? Here’s what parents actually want to know… 👇

📅 Important Dates & Reminders

I always include all school calendar updates on my newsletters (even if the school sent out a separate calendar) along with info about:

  • Parent-teacher conferences
  • Picture day
  • Luncheons
  • Standardized testing schedule
  • Dress-up days
  • Field trip info

📚 What We’re Learning This Month/Week

Give parents a quick snapshot of what’s happening in class such as:

  • Learning objectives for the various subjects (especially since students love to tell their parents they ‘don’t know’ what they’ve been learning) 🙃
  • Weekly sight words or spelling words

📌 Homework & Project Updates

  • Upcoming due dates 📆
  • Reading goal
  • Study tips 📝

🎉 Student Highlights & Shout-Outs

  • Feature a Student of the Month 🌟
  • Celebrate class achievements 🏆
  • Showcase student artwork or writing ✏️

👩‍🏫 Teacher Tips: How to Make Newsletters quick & easy

1️⃣ Use a Reusable Template – Keep the same format each month and just swap out the details.
2️⃣ Keep It Short & Sweet – Parents are busy! Use bullet points and simple sections.
3️⃣ Schedule Newsletter Prep – Block out 10 minutes at the end of the week or month to update your newsletter.
4️⃣ Use a Digital Version – Send newsletters via email, Google Classroom, Dojo, or Seesaw to ensure parents see them.
5️⃣ Batch Newsletters for the Year – Use the same template and pre-fill key dates so future months/weeks are plug-and-play!
